Sarah Carey

Animator / Artist / Teacher

Sarah Carey teaches 7th Grade Art, Studio 3D, Animation, Art & Commerce, ICAP, and "Art at Lunch" at Edgemont Jr./Sr. High School. Ms. Carey graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) from a five-year dual degree BFA/MAT program. While at MICA, she majored in animation as an undergraduate and then went on to receive her Master of Arts in Teaching. As an undergraduate, she studied the medium of animation in depth, including traditional hand-drawn, stop-motion, 3D animation, puppet construction, and set building. Throughout her teaching experiences, she has been able to design and implement developmentally appropriate animation units that enrich a typical art curriculum through technology. She also enjoys sharing her ideas with other educators and has presented numerous times at the National Art Education Association's Convention, most recently on “Teaching with Purpose: Planning Units with Meaning and Relevance.” She is excited to share her teaching philosophy with the Edgemont community – that through art-making, we are able to find our own voice, grow our self-confidence, and build empathy with others. Chris Coffin

Artist / Teacher

Chris Coffin is a teacher of Photography, Advanced Photography, STEAM Studio, Studio 2D, Studio 3D, Art & Commerce, Film Appreciation and Digital Film Making at Edgemont Jr/Sr High School.  Chris possesses a Bachelor of Arts from Providence College, majoring in Fine Art and Marketing with a minor in Western Civilizations.  He also possesses a Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute as a Sculpture major focusing in the study of New Forms. He also possesses a Master of Science from Hofstra University, majoring in Art Education. Chris believes in a philosophical approach where process is equally as important (if not more important) than product.  He believes that in a world that is increasingly driven by image content, that art education should be focused on Visual Literacy and Visual Communication.  The conceptual development of an idea and how to express one’s self in creative ways that are outside the box, and divergent are the cornerstones of many of his class projects. Through Chris’ interest in a multi-disciplinary approach, he combines tactile and physical art making processes, state of the art technology, art historical content, and STEAM principles to provide a broad exposure to many art making disciplines.

Fun Facts:  Chris Coffin is a professional artist as well as educator. Chris exhibits his work both nationally and internationally, and has been reviewed in the New York Times as well as numerous other art publications. In addition, his work has been presented in lectures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, and at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Chris was an NCAA Division 1 swimmer, loves to surf, snowboard, and compete in triathlon. He hates stickers on fruit, loves the smell of low tide, and is a die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan!  Chris contributes to the podcast “The Art & Design Series” on Swell Season Surf Radio, and has contributed to courses and has lectured at his alma mater, Pratt Institute.
