In this project, 7th graders practiced contour drawing to help them look closely and draw with more confidence. Using objects set up in the art room, each student made a detailed line drawing that shows the edges and shapes of the objects. Over two classes, students tried watercolor and oil pastel to see how each one changes the texture and mood of a picture. For their final artwork, students chose to use watercolor, oil pastel, or both together. Some used light, see-through watercolor washes; others added bold, textured oil pastel marks; some layered both for extra effects. This collection shows careful looking, strong lines, and each student’s personal color choices. Use the guiding questions below to help you deepen your observations and reflect on your emotional responses as you view the artworks!
